SPAM, Registration & Auto Updates

By Dave

I have been getting an increased number of spammers attempting to post comments. Fortunately, for first-time posters, I’m able to proofread comments before they’re approved or disapproved. After the first approved posting, individuals can post anytime. But based on experience the amount of SPAM will increase, creating more time required to monitor it. I don’t want that to become a full time job.

Therefore, I have turned on the requirement for all those desiring to write comments to become registered users. I know this may be an inconvenience for you but Amy and I appreciate the small amount of time that it will take to complete the registration.

As part of the registration process, you will be given an opportunity to receive notice of our Travelogue postings automatically to the email address you provide. You can select to receive an excerpt or the full text in your email box. You can also select HTML or plain text format. The choice is yours.

Registration

To register, simply click on “Click Here To Register For This Site” located in the right sidebar.  The initial registration box requires you to enter a user name and your email address. The user name cannot be changed. Also if you want automatic updates, be sure to check the box shown at bottom of the sign-up box. You’ll be emailed a password. (Be sure to check your Junk/Spam folder as well for this email.) After you sign in you’ll go directly to your profile page. Here you can enter more information about yourself and will have other options available to you including changing your password.

Now for those who don’t want to register or don’t intend to post comments, you can still receive automatic updates by subscribing with your email address or using the RSS feed. The instructions follow.

Non-Registered Users: Receive updates automatically via Email Subscription Service.

There are two locations available for you to sign-up for an email subscription. The easiest is on the right sidebar near the top. The title is “Subscribe & Be Notified!” All you have to do is enter your email address and click on the “Subscribe” button. As a security measure, this process is double opt-in. You’ll receive an email requiring you to click on the provided link in order to complete the subscription process. You can unsubscribe at any time. This same sign-up process is available on the “SUBSCRIBE” page and the tab link is at the top of the web-page.

Non-Registered Users: Receive updates automatically via RSS feed.

In the upper right-hand corner of this web page are two symbols and words. They are “Posts” and “Comments.”

If you only want to receive our new posts, then click only on “Posts.” After you click on “Posts,” you’ll be transferred to a new window. Depending on which web browser you are using, you will be allowed to subscribe to our travelogue RSS feed.

The Mozilla Firefox browser in my opinion is the best and Amy and I use it all the time. Firefox also gives you several options as to where you want the RSS feed to be sent to. You can have the RSS feed sent to Live Bookmarks within the Firefox browser or to Microsoft Outlook or to Google and others. It’s your choice.

Internet Explorer (IE) sends the RSS feed only within its Favorites Feed folder. If the RSS feed can be sent any other way in IE, I don’t know about it; I rarely use IE anymore.

If you want to receive the comment updates too, click on “Comments” and complete the same process.

For those of you with RSS feed experience, then you know what you’re doing and I’m sure you already have your system.

If you have difficulty with any of these instructions, please let me know. I want to make this as simple as possible yet keep the SPAM problem under control.

Hope you guys are well. Ingrid and I are in San Diego. It’s my Navy weekend.

The last time I was at Mt. Home AFB was in 1976 (?). I think that was my uncle’s last active duty assignment before retirement.

    What’s the latest?

  • Despite the fact that we’ve been here three weeks tomorrow, we are doing well. We have been to nearly every state and national park within one day’s driving distance, been to Boise SEVERAL times, saw “A Christmas Carol” in 3D at the Boise IMAX theater, got massages at a mall massage shop (felt GREAT!), spent 3 hours at Cabela’s and another 45 minutes or so at the TJ MAXX store, you can see we have kept ourselves fairly busy. I have done laundry twice here and should do another couple of loads, baked lots of bread (YUM!) and generally gotten fat. Hey! We’re GOOD! Hopefully, our parts will arrive later this week and we can get a move on to Denver and then Kansas City! We want to be in North Carolina by the beginning of December! Let’s get movin’!

I bet San Diego was gorgeous! Hope you had a good time!
